About us

The Baltic Sea Commission is one of the six Geographical Commissions that make up the backbone of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR).  Founded in 1996, the Baltic Sea Commission now brings together around 25 Regions from six States from the European Union and beyond.
An important forum for constructive debate and the sharing of best practice on common issues and concerns across the Baltic Sea area, the Baltic Sea Commission actively contributes to the reflections of the CPMR and to the preparation of its policy positions, whilst at the same time acting as a think tank and as a lobby for the regions around the Baltic Sea.

History

Today, 2015, nineteen years have passed since the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) Baltic Sea Commission was founded on a ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki in 1996.

In the middle of the 90’s there was historical momentum, with the collapse of the USSR leading to new possibilities to interact and move freely across previous east and west borders. With shared historical backgrounds resting on trade patterns and cultural similarities, superficial gaps between the nations in the area could be closed. The integration within the European Union and the ongoing enlargement had at this point come to include both Finland and Sweden, Poland and the three Baltic States were soon to follow. Challenges such as social diversion, insufficient infrastructure and environmental threats had to be dealt with in the Baltic Sea Region.

Prospects for the future were positive and saturated with a belief that all parties would benefit from social, cultural and economic integration in the area. The actors of the Baltic Sea region had the potential to contribute to the development of the whole of Europé. The BSC, as part of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe, was founded in this spirit.
